History is Alive on Route 206
Charles Decker of the Afton Historical Museum, 116 S. Main St, Afton, is a veritable treasure of facts and places in and around Afton, where Mormon prophet Joseph Smith and his Mormon followers lived and loved before the long trek to Nauvoo, IL. He can tell you about those golden plates, and maybe a few things found buried right around here. It's worth a visit to Afton on Sundays between 1 and 4 PM. Ask for Mr. Decker.
On the first Saturday of the month, the Colcheste Historical Society opens up its downstairs room in the Town Hall, Tanner Road, Downsville. The Walton Historical Society opens its doors by appointment. Call B. Bennett at (607) 865-8835.
On the 2nd Saturday, Greene Historical Society's Museum is open from 9:30 AM until 3. It's on the 2nd dloor of the Moore Memorial Library, Genesee St.
Tuesdays or Thursdays you can visit the Sidney Historical Society in the Civic Center at 21 Liberty St., Sidney. The hours are 1-4:30 pm on Tuesday, and 10 AM to 12 PM on Thursday.
